My son was recently invited to a wonderful birthday party themed around mythical creatures. Guests were encouraged to dress as their favorite (phoenix, griffin, dragon, unicorn, satyr, chimera, gremlin, dwarf, elf, harpy, goblin, hippogriff, fairy, Cerberus, Gorgon, mermaid, centaur, cyclops, troll, Pegasus, minotaur, sphinx, yeti, the list goes on and on), and the party was held at a local nature center.
When we arrived, the birthday boy was dressed as a pixie (an extremely mischievous elf) complete with face paint, a pointed green felt hat, and curly-toed shoes. First, guests were brought into the animal hut and "creatures" were passed around to admire and touch. Then we were led on a treasure hunt that included clues for finding a specific mythical creature in a hidden location. The creatures found were actually beautiful little paintings by the birthday boy's father, an amazingly talented artist by trade. Each painting had a clue attached that led to the next creature. The final clue took us to a treasure box filled with tiny mythical creatures and chocolate gold coins, one of each for everyone.
Pizza, salad, and plenty of playground time followed, all topped off with an incredible (and delicious!) dragon cake. The perfect ending to such a creative party.
